Tokyo’s subway system is arguably one of the most complex in the world. The map itself can be an immediate turn-off for any unfamiliarized straphangar. But exactly how do all these lines run underground, overlapping as they carry hundreds of thousands of passengers each day?

Tokyo University graduate student Takatsugu Kuriyama decided to answer that question be recreating an accurate three-dimensional model of Tokyo’s lifeline by using multi-colored tubes strung with wire. Different color liquids pulsate throughout all 18 lines, creating a staggering picture of what goes on below the streets of Tokyo every day.

The only worry I have about Priority Inbox is the additional complexity it adds to Gmail. As I said this past week on TWiG, Gmail is just getting stuffed with new and more advanced features: phone calling, Buzz, Tasks, and now this, not to mention the (awesome, but huge) buffet of optional features in Labs.

There is lots of coverage on this already today but I am linking to Gina’s piece because a) it is a nice, concise overview but also b) she brings up the important observation quoted above.

GMail has such an overwhelming myriad of settings, features and options now it is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. Priority Inbox is a compelling feature but I sure would have an even easier time dealing with my mail if there were not chat lists and buzzing and themes and all sorts of other stuff I had to turn off just to, you know, check my email.

Having set up my father with a Gmail account, I know that chat lists and themes and a lot of the other stuff that bothers people about Gmail are things you have to turn on, not off, or they’re easily minimized to just a heading in the sidebar. Dad doesn’t even know or notice they’re there.

Tech-savvy people are often their own worst enemies when it comes to things like this; we turn everything on, try out all the bells and whistles, then get distracted and forget to turn it all off. Gmail is easy to use without any Labs items turned on; Priority Inbox is one of the few features I might actually turn on for my Dad.

When a new feature appears I often take the opportunity to go through Labs and turn off some of the things I don’t need. I’m waiting patiently for Priority Inbox to appear in my Gmail.
